Instrument Semiotics

چکیده
In this and the following companion paper, Tearing Interfaces Apart, we shall present a theoretical semiotic analysis of interfaces and demonstrate how this analysis can be coupled to an empirical analysis of a work domain and its changing needs for information. The work domain is maritime maneuvering and navigation. We do this by exploiting two senses of the concept “analysis”. “Analysis” means “resolution into simple elements” (Concise Oxford Dictionary 1964) and the two senses are:

Semiotics-based Manufacturing System Integration
G. D. Putnik, Editorial identifies semiotics as a candidate framework for a new MSI paradigm to extend the solution space of the MSI discipline with focus on use, interpretation and communication of and about technical solutions for MSI. Semiotics comprises syntax, semantic and pragmatics. Contrary to the first two the latter is totally unknown in the MSI discipline, but all three are used in i...
متن کاملInstrument semiotics: a semiotic approach to interface components
This paper will briefly present a semiotic approach to instrument interfaces based on a conceptual analysis of displayand control-components and their compositional semantics. Displayand control-components can be considered as prototypical objects that are themselves constructed from combinations of more elementary signs expressed in some combination of media. Different types of signs (or “repr...
متن کاملGilles Deleuze: Beyond Peirce’s Semiotics
This paper studies the role of the semiotic discussions of Charles Sanders Peirce, the American philosopher and mathematician, in the formation of Deleuze’s first leading book on cinema, Cinema 1: the Movement-Image,in whichthe author surpasses Peirce’s semiotics. We will show how Deleuze creates a new form of signs in his second leading book on cinema, Cinema 2: the Time-Image. Deleuze had tri...

The Reading of Museum is the title of a book by Reza Dabirinezhad that has just been published and is available to the Iranian academic and cultural community. The author is a museum specialist and one of the renowned executives of the country's museums, who uses the methodology of semiotics to analyze the mechanism of the interpretation of museum objects and the Semantic System in museums. Sin...
متن کاملMethodological Aspects of Computational Semiotics
In the following, elementary constituents of models in computational semiotics are outlined. This is done by referring to computer simulations as a framework which neither aims to describe artificial sign systems (as done in computer semiotics), nor to realize semiotic functions in “artificial worlds” (as proposed in “artificial semiosis”). Rather, the framework referred to focuses on precondit...
